Brisbane’s first taxi company lives on today within the Black & White Cabs family. The Ascot Taxi Service was started in 1919 by Edmund William, Henry Beckman and Edward Roland Videan, from the Ascot Garage on Racecourse Road, with only one vehicle. By 1924 the fleet had grown to four vehicles; three Willys Knight tourers and an Overland, the first sedan taxi in Brisbane. At the cutting edge of innovation, Ascot Taxi Service was the leading company to introduce two-way radios in taxis. Queensland can proudly and legitimately claim to being home to the greenest taxi fleets in the world. Hybrid vehicles now make up over 80% of Black & White Cabs taxis, which is contributing to a decline in the amount of pollutants being emitted into the environment and greatly reducing our carbon footprint. The hybrid fleet, including Prius, Camry and eco-diesel maxi cabs, is producing 80,000 tons less carbon making our taxis run cleaner and have better fuel economy.
