As a parent you may feel your child is capable of so much more, yet doesn't seem to be able to grasp reading and writing to meet your expectation. It is important to acknowledge that dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence, as it can effect anyone, from gifted to below average intelligence. Intervention is vital and 2% of any class will require one-on-one to help catch up. By the time Naplan comes around in Year 3, many dyslexics may be three or four years behind in reading age. Rather than focusing on the negative aspects of dyslexia, it is vital that we recognise the unique natural strengths and qualities this learning difference offers. A dear friend of mine, has a signed copy of one of Roald Dahl's books with a spelling error - dsylexia! Specific Learning Difficulties On a daily basis I am faced with parents and teachers searching for help with children who �just don't get it'. Dyslexia is a tricky term to understand and there are many varied definitions, as children display different combinations of difficulties,with varied levels of severity. They may display difficulty with sound manipulation, speed of speech production, working memory, concentration, processing information, maths and many more and in different combinations, making it a mine field for parents. Dyslexia Tutoring Tutoring sessions run for 45 minutes and it is recommended to attend 12 lessons. We believe it is best to teach younger children early in the day. Teaching is adapted for all ages. Secondary and Tertiary students may attend one-on-one study skills sessions or do so as a small group. Workshops offered during holidays: Touch Typing Writing Study Skills Spelling Dyslexia Screenings and Assessment Dyslexia screenings Are conducted on Friday Mornings. Screening Otacoustic Emissions Testing TEOAE and DPOAE for six months and over - objective test that does not require the patient to co-operate/understand or subjectively respond. Great for younger children as a pass/fail screening (similar to newborn SWISH screening in the hospitals) gives a pass/fail results. WE are located at Erina, Gosford and Kincumber.
