The store was so busy that the community would share tables with random people while enjoying their meal. Our family-owned business is named after Baba (which means father) and Ali (son of Mick who was born at the time of the opening) who still works in the business alongside even more family members helping bring our passion to our customers across the country. The logo symbol of the genie was inspired by the Arabian folklore tale of ‘Ali Baba and the 40 thieves’. Basically, a character regarded as middle eastern Robin Hood. This symbol quickly became a recognised symbol of the freshly rolled kebabs sealed in that memorable red bag. 40 years later that inspiration can still be seen in our brand and our well-known product can be found across the country in over 28 stores. The authentic middle eastern flavours are now our identity in the community. Founders Mick & Karl are extremely passionate about every single detail of the Ali Baba product. After running a successful doughnut business, Bombolini Doughnuts (a staple at Canberra’s Capital Region Farmers Market, Southisde Farmers Market, The Forage, Handmade Markets and more); Geoff and Kate thought it was time to expand on Geoff’s talents as a chef and take the plunge in opening a cafe. The result is Kynefin. A little cafe in Hall, where simple things are done well. Here at Kynefin we make homely, British-influenced food that makes you feel good. The word Kynefin (pronounced kin-ev-an) is Welsh for one’s habitat, or a place where they feel comfortable and familiar. Our coffee has its origins in Ethopia and so we thought it fitting to choose Arabica beans from this region to form the basis of our Premium Blend. It gives our coffee a great, earthy body. The inclusion of a fine Robusta coffee from India enriches this blend, while the other Arabica coffees from Central and South America and Uganda add complexity. Our Premium Blend coffee is bold but not bitter and has a long caramel finish. At source, all our coffees are fairly traded and are often certified organic and rainforest alliance as well.
