Cooktop installation can be done in two ways: flush with the counter or raised slightly above it.

A cooktop is a type of stove that is installed by cooktop installers on top of an existing kitchen counter or range. Cooktops are available with either gas or electric components. The cost of installation by cooktop installers depends on the type of cooktop you choose (gas cooktop or electric one), whether it is being installed in an existing counter with or without a backsplash, ease of access, and whether modifications to your current electrical system are necessary. Every company offers cooktops in a wide variety of makes, and styles including under-cabinet, built-in models and halogen. Depending on the installer you may need to have additional electrical or plumbing work done. More costs involved in the installation include:

  • Service connection and delivery

  • Installer service charges

  • Plumbing and inspection services

A gas cooktop needs a connection to a natural gas line or a propane tank. Electric cooktops need access to an electrical outlet but do not require any other modifications throughout the kitchen. Cooktop installation costs will vary depending on whether you choose to raise or lower your cooking surface, as well as whether you install the appliance without adding additional counter space (an under-mount cooktop installation).

Can you replace a glass top on a stove?

Yes, you can, but it might not be as easy as you think. To replace glass cooktops on a stove, you will need to remove the surrounds and the burner covers. You will also need to disconnect the electrical connection and gas supply from the old cooktop in the kitchen. After that, you can follow these steps for installing a new cover:

  1. Clean the surface of your stove's top before removing any doors or drawers or other components.

  2. Remove all of the screws that secure the cover to your kitchen stove.

  3. Unfasten all of the clips that hold both sides of your stovetop in place.

  4. Peel off any caulking that is still clinging to your oven top before installing the new one.

  5. Clean the surface of your stove again and make sure that there are no electrical wires or gas lines hiding under your old glass cooktop.

  6. Use a level to ensure that the overlay for your replacement cooktop is straight before securing it in place using screws, caulk, and fasteners.

  7. Reattach any components that were removed when taking apart the old cooktop.

  8. Turn on the power supply to your oven as well as any gas appliances you might have attached via the appropriate switches near your oven's gas line connection.

What is an induction cooktop?

It is an electric cooktop that uses electromagnetic energy to provide heat. Electromagnetic waves are generated by an industrial-grade magnetron and sent to the bottom of a cooking pot. The surface of the pot is heated due to its conducting properties, which in turn heats up the food inside. Some advantages to these cooktops are that they can be used with metal pots or pans which other conventional types of stoves cannot use, and they heat up faster and more efficiently than electric cooktops.

Is special cookware required for an induction cooktop?

Yes, you will need special cookware to take advantage of the healing properties of induction cooking top as they work by sending electromagnetic waves to the bottom of a cooking pot to create heat. Any metal-based materials can be used with this cooktop, though cast iron and aluminium are not recommended. Most such cooktops will come with a list of compatible materials.

Do I need an electrician to install a cooktop?

It depends on the type of cooktop you choose. If you install a gas cooktop, you will need to contact an electrician or gas technician for their service to hook it up to your home's natural gas. Electric cooktops can be installed by anyone who is familiar with basic electrical wiring but the task is probably best left to a professional.

What types of cooktops are available?

Cooktops can be made of either gas or electricity and come in a variety of colours. It is also possible to install an induction cooking top, which uses electromagnetic energy to generate heat without using flames.

Gas cooktops

Gas cooktops are the most common type available today, and there are three types: sealed burner, broiler (open coil), and exposed (irregular). Sealed burner types have burners enclosed inside the surface unit where they cannot be reached by pot handles or spills. Broiler types have exposed coils that line the entire front edge of the stovetop, allowing pots and pans to rest directly on top of them so food can brown underneath with the flame from above. Exposed (irregular) stovetops are a combination of both types.

Cost to install gas cooktops

Being the most expensive ones to be installed, expect to pay $300- $1000 for the gas cooktop installation cost. The new cooktop installation cost (gas) by different service providers include only installation charges.

Electric cooktops

Electric cooktops come in smooth top and coil-style models, with the latter being the most common. Coil-type electric cooktops have heating coils under a continuous surface that is covered by a layer of glass. Smoothtop electric cooktops are made out of solid ceramic or porcelain and heat faster than their coil counterparts.

Cost of electric cooktops installation

You need $300- $600 for the installation job. You might need to spend for the delivery, plumbing for the water supply, fee for the electrician and plumber.

Induction cooktops

This cooktop uses electromagnetic energy to generate heat without using flames. The cooking pot itself becomes the heating element as it is made from metal, which allows it to conduct electricity efficiently enough to produce heat (unlike previous stovetops). These cookers use less energy and can bring water to boil faster than other stovetops, but they are more expensive.

How long does it take to install a cooktop?

Cooktop installation is an easy process, but it does depend on the type and installer. It will take about one to two hours if you are installing an electric cooktop; this includes the time for making sure that your electrical circuit can safely handle the additional load. If you're installing a gas cooktop, it will take between two and four hours, depending on what sort of gas installation is necessary. If you're installing an induction cooking top, it will take one to three hours. Factors affecting the installation time include:

  • Where the unit needs to be placed

  • Type of the new cooktop

  • Installation of additional products

  • Space for installation already cut out or requires a new cut out

  • Availability of space

Will I have to replace my surrounding cabinets?

You will not need to replace your surrounding cabinets if you install a cooktop on top of the counter. However, if you are installing an electric cooktop, your cabinets may be too close and require some kind of modification. This is because electric cooktops produce heat and can pose a fire hazard if your cabinets are too close. You might need to redo your plumbing since plumbing is needed to make the water available near the cooktop.
