There are a huge number of reasons behind why your garage door won't open.
It may be due to these reasons:
Ensure that the opener is plugged in. This could have become accidentally removed from the outlet.
Check the breaker, an electric surge could have caused the unit to trip. Flip the switch of the power source to the motor to reset it.
Check to make sure that all the manual locks have been disengaged.
Check to see if the cord or switch responsible for disengaging the trolley has been accidentally pulled. If it is, use the owner's manual to reengage it.
Try opening the garage door via the wall-mounted control keypad, if this is successful, your remote control is at fault. If the light comes on the motor when you press the remote but no movement then this may not be the problem.
The photo eye is a sensor serving as a safety feature and dirt can significantly limit its sensitivity and prevent the door from moving. Clean the sensor with a soft rag and try again. You can find the photo eye approximately 4-8 inches from the ground on the inside of the garage door.
Check the track, if the rollers come off the tracks the garage door won't open automatically, even though it will still open manually.
To know if springs are broken or worn, disconnect the motor and try to lift the garage door on your own. If you find this easy to do, the spring is likely okay, however, if this is very difficult, it may need to be replaced. Torsion spring replacement should always be done by a professional.
The problem could also be your motor. If you hear the motor running, but the door is not moving, ensure that both are engaged. If you have confirmed that the power service to the motor is good and not the problem, you may have a faulty motor and need to call a highly trained repairman to fix the problem.
You will then need to open the lock located inside the garage doors and locate the emergency release cord.
This is a red cord that is normally located near the centre of the door hanging from the trolley. Pulling this cord will disrupt the connection of the door to the trolley allowing you to open your garage door on your own.
Once you've completed all the steps, lift the door, pulling from the bottom up until the door stops moving and stays in place.
The cost to repair or service your garage door will vary based on the repair being carried out and the materials used to make the door. On average repairs can cost anywhere between $100 and $350.
Garage doors that will not move up or down, or hang unevenly, may have a problem with the door track. There could be an obstruction, need lubrication, or the track could be damaged.Screeching or squealing sounds which occur when your garage door opens or closes may also result from problems with the track. To repair this you will need approximately $150.
Torsion springs may be the most costly to repair - this is because the process of replacing broken springs is labour intensive. The labour cost alone can cost you an average of $300. Garage doors which fall quickly may have broken chains or cables, while the cables are not expensive to replace, the installation does take time and attracts a cost of between $150 to $200.
Other repairs such as replacing glass, repairing dents and replacing your circuit board may cost you between $75 and $100.
There are many reasons why your garage door is no longer responding to your remote control. To fix the problem you may need to:
If the wall-mounted control panel can open the door, your batteries may be dead. If you replace the battery and the problem still exists, the signal between the remote and the transmitter used to open or close the door could be disrupted. Stand at least 20 feet from the garage door as at longer distances the signal will be too weak. Also, check the antenna on the opener to see if it is damaged or has a build-up of debris. If the problem is a damaged antenna, call a professional to have it rectified.
You need to ensure that the lock button has not been activated. Press the button to unlock the garage door if it was activated. You can also reprogram the remote and change the settings by pressing the learn button on the opener and the button on the remote until you see the light flashing on the garage door opener. If this was successful, you can now use your remote to open the door.
