Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions are available with a Medicare rebate?

It depends on the type of referral. With a Better Access Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) you are entitled to ten sessions, delivered across two ‘treatment blocks’. Typically this is 6 sessions, then you return to your doctor and get re-referred for the remaining 4 sessions.

What should be in a ‘Medicare’ Better Access referral?

The letter of referral should state your date of birth and address; the number of sessions approved; a statement requesting the provision of psychological treatment, and an eligible diagnosis or mental health symptoms.
