Lightner Centre - Clinical Psychology

The Lightner Centre is a Clinical Psychology practice providing expert, evidence-based and individually tailored psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions for clients aged five years and older. The Lightner Centre differentiates itself from other psychology practices as we do not endorse general and generic interventions and only provide evidence-based and validated treatment by Clinical Psychologists (and Clinical Psychology Registrars). Lightner Witmer coined the term “Clinical Psychology” and opened the first Clinical Psychology practice in 1896. Lightner’s approach to the practice of clinical psychology was to focus on identifying the cause of reported difficulties, developing a treatment plan to address these difficulties, and then researching these treatments to review their effectiveness. The Lightner Centre aims to adopt the goals and ideals of Lightner Witmer to create a centre for Clinical Psychology that focuses on the delivery of evidence-based treatments that address the fundamental cause of mental health conditions and not just the symptom.
