Anyone with a car licence can enrol in a truck driver course, the only pre-requisite is that you must have held a class C licence for at least a year, although for some licence classes, you need to have held your class C for a minimum of 2 years. Most Central Coast truck driving schools offer training for the more popular commercial truck licences namely, light rigid (LR), medium rigid (MR), heavy rigid (HR) and heavy combination (HC)—with many driving centres registered to provide assessment as well as training. You will also find driver education for more specialist courses such as NSW Bus Driver Authority (BDA), NSW Ambulance, Multi combination (MC) and forklift licences. So which truck licence do you need? If you want to drive a community bus, motorhome or small truck, the light rigid (LR) licence course is ideal for you. With an LR licence you can drive a vehicle of more than 4.5 tonne but less than 8, or one that seats more than 12 adults, up to a maximum of 8 tonne. And don't worry if you haven't got a truck or minibus to do the course, as your local driving school should be able to supply you with one for the duration. For larger 2-axle-vehicles, such as busses, coaches, trucks and mobile cranes over 8 tonne, you would need to apply for the medium rigid (MR) licence. Heavy rigid (HR) and heavy combination (HC) truck licences entitle you to drive a vehicle between 8 and 9 tonne with 3 or more axles. The HC licence allows you to also tow a trailer of up to 9 tonne, ideal if you want to drive semi-trailers, truck and dogs, floats or low loaders. When looking for truck driver education there are a number of things to consider. Do you have a vehicle or will you need to be supplied with one? Are you an absolute beginner or would a 1-day course provide you with all you need to pass your assessment? Has the course been approved by NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS)?
