What 19-inch car tyres are right for me?

When choosing the tyre to buy, ensure you know the tyre label and understand how it works. Car tyres labels are manufactured with their details on the side and contain information indicating the class of efficiency for fuel (letter A to G), class of wet grip (letter A to G) and the measured value of external rolling noise.

Tyre Size: the tyre sizes determine how they behave on roads such as cornering, braking, acceleration. The width of a tyre will determine the contact patch of such tyre.

Knowing the right tyre size

Depending on your preferences and the purpose of your vehicle it's good to know the tyre size that is suitable for your vehicle.

  • C1 tyres are primarily for cars.

  • C2 tyres are primarily for light commercial vehicles, e.g van.

  • C3 tyres are primarily for heavy vehicles, e.g buses, trucks.

If you cannot find the vehicle's manual then you should find a guide for the tyre in some locations such as the driver side, inside the glove box, or around your petrol tank. The sizes usually have numbers and letters in them. We've outlined everything you need about what tyres you need.

On a typical tyre an example of a tyre size is usually indicated such as this; P225/70R16 9IS.

The "P" signifies a "passenger car." If "LT" is written, then the tyre indicates suitability for "Light Truck" ; these are usually used for heavy cargo or trailers. "T" means "Temporary" and it is seen on spare tires. "ST" mean "Special Trailer".

Width

The number that follows the first letter indicates the width of the tyre and is usually in millimetres. Like our example, it shows a nominal width of 225 millimetres.

Aspect ratio

The next number after the slash that follows the width indicates the aspect ratio and it is calculated by dividing tyres height off the rim by width. They are usually valued in percentages. Our above example has its height as 70% of its width.

Construction

The letter that follows the Aspect Ratio is the indication of the internal construction. There are two types; R - Radial and D - Diagonal or Bias Ply.

Rim diameter

This number on the tyre size code indicates the right rim on which the tyre can be mounted. Our example being used shows a ream of 16-inch diameter would fit in.

Load index

This shows how much load or weight in pounds a tyre can carry when fully inflated.

Speed rating

This is the last figure in a tyre size sequence. It shows the speed capability the tyre can carry.
