Tyre Size: the tyre sizes determine how they behave on roads such as cornering, braking, acceleration. The width of a tyre will determine the contact patch of such tyre.
Depending on your preferences and the purpose of your vehicle it's good to know the tyre size that is suitable for your vehicle.
C1 tyres are primarily for cars.
C2 tyres are primarily for light commercial vehicles, e.g van.
C3 tyres are primarily for heavy vehicles, e.g buses, trucks.
On a typical tyre an example of a tyre size is usually indicated such as this; P225/70R16 9IS.
The "P" signifies a "passenger car." If "LT" is written, then the tyre indicates suitability for "Light Truck" ; these are usually used for heavy cargo or trailers. "T" means "Temporary" and it is seen on spare tires. "ST" mean "Special Trailer".
The number that follows the first letter indicates the width of the tyre and is usually in millimetres. Like our example, it shows a nominal width of 225 millimetres.
The next number after the slash that follows the width indicates the aspect ratio and it is calculated by dividing tyres height off the rim by width. They are usually valued in percentages. Our above example has its height as 70% of its width.
The letter that follows the Aspect Ratio is the indication of the internal construction. There are two types; R - Radial and D - Diagonal or Bias Ply.
This number on the tyre size code indicates the right rim on which the tyre can be mounted. Our example being used shows a ream of 16-inch diameter would fit in.
This shows how much load or weight in pounds a tyre can carry when fully inflated.
